Portland Street Names

A friend of mine and I were discussing how terrible some of the Portland streets are named. One of the notorious crime related areas has a street named "Killingsworth." Another street here is named "Failing." I dunno, but we were thinking that a full out protest to change the names of the streets might be just the ticket to raise the morale of this city. I was kind of thinking that the name "Lovingsworth," or even "Hugginsworth" would be more appropriate than Killingsworth. Instead of "Failing" maybe "Ultimate Success Drive," or "SCORE!!! Lane."

henery failing was a businessman, banker, and multiple term mayor of the early city. william killingworth was one of the leading statesmen and early residents that created the charter of incorporation for the city of portland. just more dead white guys.

I knew they were names of people, but really? Do we need to have to deal with these "dead white guys" damnable names for the duration of the city? How about Kissingsworth, hmm? I like that one.

Santa Cruz has the street corner of "High and Stoney".

It used to be "High and Storey", but someone always seems to add a bit of touch-up paint whenever they replace the sign.

And you're just on street names. Town names in Oregon are downright bizarre:

Wanker's Corner, Zigzag, Boring -- and those are just the ones near Portland. and then there's Drain....

Wankers Corner consists of a macrobiotic feed store and a singles meatmarket, Zigzag does, Boring is. On the other hand, Philomath doesn't.

When moving up here in '91 I drove through an incredible downpour, so bad that I was convinced a squad of elves was standing on top of the cab of my truck, hurling buckets of water at my windshield. Then I saw the sign and knew it was okay: Welcome to Drain.

And did anyone else notice that the originator of this thread is self-named Tinkle? Why? Does her name have anything to do with her concern with names? There's a lovely classical poem about the poet being fascinated by the fact that his lover tinkles. Perhaps that's it.

And thus the name was EARNED.

I do truly despise the self christened especially when it hasn't even been close to earned. Especially if the name is "Crystal Awareness" or "Savage Dick Ng" or something equally luidcirous.

Good name, then. (Could have been "Puddles.")

The problems with changing street names is that people have to live there, and are already living there. Businesses have invested in name recognition and location familiarity. I have friends who live on Failing, and the name has never slowed them down. I think the only people who live in Wankers Corners are the monks in the Thai monastery. There are people who live in Boring, but no one knows why. Philomath hosts a nice Renfaire but is otherwise unnecessary. The locals hardly ever notice, and when they do they see no reason to identify or assume any significance.

Look at the fuss over naming MLK in Portland. And the recent fuss over Chavez. The locals hated it, the Mexican community would not believe that people wouldn't accept it if the just snuck it through City Hall. And then the naming became an ego thing when the City Council suggested that selecting another, smaller street might work better. Now the whole subject is so loaded with political freight that no one wants to touch it.

Your own suggestions are to my ear, cutesy, politically correct, and politically trivial. They have no depth, no substance. And each one reminds us of the name that you want to change. They are obviously joke names. (Yeah. Let's legally change your name to Puddles. And no, I don't care what you think about it: that's what your driver's license will say.)

It's like criticizing someone's taste in genre fiction, or popular art -- it can't be done without stepping on toes. And besides, in the end, it's really none of your business, is it? Or mine.

I think I'm getting way too involved here. Call me Eric the Much Too Intense.

Um, Eric, take a chill pill :) I agree with you. Changing 32nd to Cesar Chavez is ridiculous, businesses have to change advertising which could cost quite a bit, especially for ma & pa businesses. This is just a rhetorical question, for poking fun, and maybe perhaps now we even have a better reason to "protest" the names of the city streets.
